A smart thermostat is one of the best-value smart home upgrades you can make. Studies consistently show that smart thermostats reduce heating and cooling bills by 10–23% per year. With the average US household spending $900+ annually on heating and cooling, that's $90–$200 back in your pocket every year — often paying for the thermostat within 12–18 months.

In 2026, the competition in the smart thermostat category is fierce. Google's Nest Learning Thermostat, Ecobee's SmartThermostat Premium, and Honeywell's X8S (which replaced the discontinued T9) each take a different approach to solving the same problem. Here's how they compare.

1. Ecobee SmartThermostat Premium — Best Overall

The Ecobee SmartThermostat Premium is the most feature-complete smart thermostat on the market, and it's our top recommendation for most households in 2026. What sets it apart from the competition is the included SmartSensor — a small room sensor that measures temperature and occupancy in a room other than where the thermostat is installed.

This matters because most homes have uneven heating and cooling. The bedroom at the back might be 4°C cooler than the living room where the thermostat is mounted. With Ecobee's room sensors, the thermostat considers the temperature where you actually are, not just where the stat is mounted. You can add up to 32 sensors throughout your home.

Ecobee supports Apple HomeKit, Amazon Alexa, Google Home, Samsung SmartThings, and Home Assistant. The HomeKit integration is particularly strong — it exposes all sensors directly into Apple Home. For Home Assistant, there's a first-class official integration with full local API access.

The thermostat also has a built-in microphone and speaker, functioning as an Alexa or Siri endpoint. This is either a feature or a privacy concern depending on your perspective — it's disableable if you prefer.

2. Nest Learning Thermostat (4th Gen) — Best Looking

The Nest Learning Thermostat is the most recognisable smart thermostat ever made, and the 4th generation model released in late 2024 is the best Nest yet. The stainless steel ring and minimal display have been refreshed with a slightly thinner profile, sharper screen, and improved geofencing accuracy.

The Nest's key differentiator is its learning algorithm. In the first week, it pays attention to when you manually adjust the temperature and builds a schedule based on your habits. After a couple of weeks, many users report never needing to touch it again — it just knows.

The 4th gen adds native HomeKit support, which was a long-standing omission from earlier Nest models. Google Home and Alexa are of course supported. For Home Assistant, the official Nest integration works well but requires cloud connectivity.

3. Honeywell Home X8S — Best for Multi-Zone

The Honeywell Home X8S replaced the T9 we used to recommend here; Honeywell now lists the T9 as discontinued. Resideo launched the X8S in December 2025 at $219.99, or about $250 bundled with a Smart Room Sensor. Like the T9, it's designed for homes where different rooms need different temperatures: optional room sensors let it prioritise heating or cooling in the rooms you're actually using, and Honeywell adds an onboard radar presence sensor.

The X8S doesn't learn your schedule like Nest, but Adaptive Recovery learns how long your system takes to reach a set temperature, and auto-away and geofencing are built in. The big change from the T9 is Matter certification, so it now works with Apple Home as well as Amazon Alexa and Google Home. It also has a 5-inch touchscreen, monitors humidity, VOCs and estimated CO2, and can show live video from compatible Ring and First Alert doorbells.

One thing to check before buying: unlike some rivals, the X8S requires a C-wire (common wire). If your system doesn't have one, look at Ecobee (which includes a Power Extender Kit) or the Google Nest Thermostat instead.

Smart Thermostat Buying Guide

Do You Have a C-Wire?

Most smart thermostats work best with a C-wire (common wire) that provides continuous power. If your existing thermostat has 5+ wires, you likely have one. If not, Ecobee includes a Power Extender Kit that works without a C-wire, and the Google Nest Thermostat runs without one in most systems. The Honeywell X8S needs one.

Does It Work With Your HVAC?

Before buying, check that your smart thermostat supports your system type — single-stage, multi-stage, heat pump, radiant floor, etc. Ecobee and Nest both have compatibility checkers on their websites.

Platform Compatibility

If you're using Apple Home or Home Assistant, Ecobee is the safest bet. If you're all-in on Google, go with Nest. If you use Amazon Alexa primarily, all three work fine.

Our Top Pick

The Ecobee SmartThermostat Premium is the best smart thermostat for most homes in 2026. It comes with a room sensor, has excellent cross-platform support, and has a mature Home Assistant integration. If design is paramount, the Nest Learning Thermostat 4th Gen is the most stylish option with strong smart home credentials.
