TL;DR

Orbi wins on ease of setup and effortless wireless mesh coverage. UniFi wins on network control, security features, and long-term scalability. For a smart home with many IoT devices, UniFi is the better choice. For pure wireless coverage with minimal configuration, Orbi is competitive.

Bottom Line

If your priority is whole-home Wi-Fi and easy setup, the Orbi 770 is excellent. If your priority is network control, VLANs, and smart home management, UniFi wins clearly.

Platform Overview

UniFi (Ubiquiti)

UniFi is an enterprise networking ecosystem designed for professional deployments, now adapted for home use. The UniFi Express 7 (successor to the UniFi Express) is the gateway, and UniFi access points such as the U7 Lite extend coverage. Everything is managed through a single controller interface with full VLAN, firewall, and traffic management capabilities.

Netgear Orbi

Orbi is Netgear's premium mesh Wi-Fi system. Its mainstream Wi-Fi 7 model is now the Orbi 770, a tri-band (2.4/5/6GHz) system rated for a top speed of around 11Gbps, with three 2.5GbE ports on the router and two on each satellite. It replaces older Wi-Fi 6 kits such as the RBK863S. Setup is app-based, simple, and designed for households who want fast Wi-Fi with minimal configuration. It's a consumer product through and through.

Wi-Fi Performance

Orbi is built as a wireless mesh first. The Orbi 770 is a tri-band Wi-Fi 7 system, so its nodes can link to each other over the wide 6GHz band while clients use the other bands, and the satellites have 2.5GbE ports if you can wire them. That makes it a strong choice for multi-storey homes where wired backhaul isn't possible.

UniFi's access points are among the best in the enterprise market, and the Express 7 itself is a tri-band Wi-Fi 7 gateway. For most home use cases the bottleneck is the ISP connection, not the wireless link. The real difference is backhaul: UniFi works best with wired access points, while Orbi gives a smoother experience if every node has to connect wirelessly.

Network Management

This is where the gap is widest. Orbi provides a consumer-friendly app with basic controls: guest network, parental controls, speed test, basic device management. It works well for what it is.

UniFi's Network controller gives you full visibility into every aspect of your network. Traffic statistics per device, client connection history, DHCP leases, DNS queries, firewall rule creation, VLAN management, IDS/IPS alerts — the depth is genuinely enterprise-grade.

For a smart home with IoT devices, cameras, and security-sensitive hardware, this level of control is not a luxury — it's a genuine need.

Smart Home Integration

Orbi has no smart home integration beyond basic network management. IoT devices connect to its guest network for basic isolation — that's about it.

UniFi's VLAN support means you can create a dedicated IoT network, segment your cameras, isolate guest devices, and configure Home Assistant to communicate across VLANs with precise firewall rules. For serious smart home deployments, this isn't optional — it's the architecture that makes everything work properly.

Final Verdict

Orbi is a premium consumer product and it excels at what it does. But for anyone with a smart home, the lack of proper VLAN support and network management makes it the wrong foundation.

UniFi costs less for equivalent coverage, offers more control, and scales as your needs grow. The setup investment pays off quickly.
