A video doorbell is one of the most impactful smart home upgrades you can make. It adds security, convenience, and peace of mind — and the best ones deliver crisp HD video, reliable motion detection, and useful two-way audio. But with dozens of options on the market, which one should you actually buy?

We've narrowed the field down to three picks for different needs and budgets. This November 2026 update replaces the discontinued Ring Video Doorbell 4 and the first-generation Arlo Video Doorbell with their current successors.

Ring Battery Doorbell 2K Plus – Best Overall

Ring Battery Doorbell 2K Plus

Ring's mid-range battery doorbell, second generation (March 2026). Square 2K head-to-toe video, Wi-Fi 6 and a quick-release battery you can swap without taking the doorbell off the wall. Works best in the Amazon/Alexa ecosystem.

The Battery Doorbell 2K Plus is the current successor to the Ring Video Doorbell 4 we used to recommend here. Ring launched it in March 2026 as the Battery Doorbell Plus (2nd Gen) at $179.99 and renamed it in August 2026. On paper it fixes the Doorbell 4's biggest limitation: instead of a wide 16:9 frame that cuts off the doormat, it records a square 1920×1920 "head-to-toe" view (140° × 140°, per Ring), so packages on the ground and visitors' faces are in the same shot.

Ring rates it for up to 6x Enhanced Zoom, with Low-Light Sight for colour video when there is some ambient light and black-and-white night vision in full darkness. It runs on a quick-release battery pack and can also be wired to an existing 8–24 VAC doorbell transformer for trickle charging. As with every Ring doorbell, video history, person alerts and package alerts need a Ring subscription; without one you get live view and motion alerts only. TechRadar's review calls the second generation a genuine step up rather than a token refresh.

Eufy Video Doorbell – Best Without a Subscription

Eufy Video Doorbell

Superior 2K resolution with on-device storage built in. No monthly fees required — ever. The clear choice for privacy-conscious buyers.

Check Price on Amazon

Eufy's video doorbell punches well above its weight by offering 2K resolution and free on-device storage with no monthly subscription. Video is processed and stored locally in the HomeBase hub — not in the cloud. For privacy-focused buyers, this is a compelling differentiator.

The 2K resolution reveals plenty of detail — you can read package labels and see faces clearly. Person and package detection work without any subscription. Two-way audio is crisp, and the app is intuitive and well-designed.

Arlo Video Doorbell – Best for Existing Arlo Users

Arlo Video Doorbell 2K (2nd Gen)

2K HDR with a square 180° diagonal view, and the choice of battery or wired installation. Best suited to those already invested in the Arlo ecosystem.

Check Price on Amazon

The second-generation Arlo Video Doorbell 2K replaced the original wired-only Arlo Video Doorbell, and went on sale in September 2023 at $129 (a cheaper HD version launched at $79). It keeps Arlo's wide 180° diagonal view in a square frame, useful for seeing packages on the ground or visitors stepping off to the side, and adds a built-in rechargeable battery with optional hardwiring.

The big catch: Arlo's best features — smart alerts (including package detection), cloud recording and video history — require an Arlo Secure subscription, and there is no local storage option. Tom's Guide estimates a recharge roughly every six months on Arlo's battery-saving presets, but the battery is built in, so you have to take the doorbell down to charge it. If you already have Arlo cameras and an active subscription, the doorbell slots in seamlessly. If you're starting fresh, Ring or Eufy offer better value.

Buying Guide: What to Look For

Wired vs. Battery

Wired doorbells (connected to your existing doorbell wiring) provide continuous power and generally faster response times. Battery-powered doorbells are easier to install anywhere but need recharging every 1–6 months depending on activity levels.

Resolution

1080p is the minimum acceptable resolution for a doorbell camera. 2K is noticeably better for identifying faces and reading text. 4K exists but adds storage costs without proportional benefit at typical doorbell distances.

Cloud vs. Local Storage

Cloud storage is convenient and accessible from anywhere but costs a monthly fee. Local storage (via SD card or hub) is free but requires the hub to be on your home network. Consider your privacy preferences and willingness to pay a subscription.

Smart Detection

Basic motion detection triggers on anything — cars, shadows, blowing leaves. Smart detection that differentiates between people, packages, and vehicles dramatically reduces false alerts. Check whether smart detection costs extra.

Our Verdict

Our Top Pick: Ring Battery Doorbell 2K Plus

For most buyers, the Ring Battery Doorbell 2K Plus hits the best balance of features, ecosystem compatibility, and price. Its head-to-toe 2K view and swappable battery are genuinely useful, Alexa integration is unmatched, and the app is the most polished in the category. If you hate subscriptions, go Eufy instead. If you're an Arlo household, their doorbell fits right in.
